 Little Tackers

Little Tackers is a very popular introduction to kids sailing and is open to kids who are 5 - 6 years old. Each session involves games on the beach and playing in our Optimist boats both on the beach and in the water. These sessions are an introduction to the Tackers program. All equipment is provided .

1.

Having Fun - kids sail in pairs in small boats. It’s a great way to meet new friends and kids have the chance to sail with others in their group.

This program is designed to provide a safe and enjoyable introduction to dinghy sailing for primary school kids.  The course includes an introduction to fundamental boat handling skills and essential safety knowledge.

When kids start sailing in Tackers 1.  they will be sailing in pairs just off the beach, there will be an Instructor and an Assistant Instructor in a safety boat supervising the group. The safety boat stays on the water all the time the kids are sailing.

2.

Tricks & Techniques. Tackers 2 is a progression from Tackers 1. Kids must have completed Tackers 1 before moving onto Tackers 2.

Have you completed Tackers 1?

Tackers 2 is designed to consolidate the experience and knowledge gained in ‘Tackers 1’. New skills and knowledge are introduced that will enable the successful participant to safely and competently sail a dinghy in controlled conditions independently.

3.

Sailing Fast!  This is a chance for the kids to sail boats on their own, learning how to make the boat go faster and sail more efficiently, whilst still keeping a large emphasis on games. By the end of Tackers 3 we expect the kids to be confident little sailors.

Have you completed Tackers 2?

 Green Fleet

The fun doesn't stop when kids finish Tackers 3. Balmoral Sailing Club have the "Green Fleet" program for the kids to progress onto. Green Fleet is a type of introductory fun racing where kids learn how to go around a race course with other kids of similar ability. The main focus is still on enjoyment!!

Children will be introduced to sailing in stronger winds and sailing in the bay. Operating times are based on Balmoral sailing Club racing times.

Green Fleet is an ongoing program. Once a child reaches Green Fleet, they can continue to sail in Green Fleet for as long as they wish, term in, term out.

Do you have to be a member of a club to participate in Tackers?

No, one of the great things about Tackers is you don't have to be a member of a club to participate. In fact, kids receive an honorary club membership during their participation in the program and some clubs extend this to their families.

Do kids need to be able to swim to participate in Tackers?

All participants are given a PFD (life jackets) and are supervised on the water by Instructors in safety boats. Swimming is not a pre-requisite to take part in Tackers, but we do recommend that teachers discuss any specific needs a participant might have regarding their confidence or ability to swim.

Are the kids out sailing on their own?

When kids start sailing in Little Tackers,Tackers 1 they will be sailing in pairs. There are usually 6-10 boats in a group and there will be an Instructor and an Assistant Instructor in a safety boat supervising the group. The safety boat stays on the water all the time the kids are sailing.

What type of boats will the kids be sailing?

The Tackers program is only delivered in a boat called an OziOpti. This boat was specifically designed for the program and is an ideal introduction to dinghy sailing. The boats allow two kids to sail together and as they gain confidence and move up from Tackers 1 to Tackers 2 they are able to sail the boat alone. The boats have built-in buoyancy which means they provide extra stability.

Do the kids need any special clothing to participate in Tackers?

•       T-shirt/Lycra Top to sail in or a long sleeve t-shirt (helps protect from the sun)
•       Hat
•       Wetsuit – we have a small selection available on a first come first served basis
•       Sunglasses - all glasses should be secured with a strap
•       Something warm i.e. jumper or sweatshirt to change into at lunchtime
•       Towel
•       Old trainers – if you want your child to wear footwear at all times – this is NOT compulsory

What are the instructor to child ratios?

There is one instructor for every 10 children. Kids sail in pairs in Tackers 1 – Having Fun and in Tackers Intro and Tackers Intro for Schools. For every six boats there is a safety boat also out on the water supervising the kids.

What qualifications do the instructors have?

Instructors hold a Yachting Australia Instructor qualification which means they have undertaken training in theory and practical of teaching sailing in small boats, completed a Level 2 First Aid course, and hold a Power Boat Handling certificate. Assistant Instructors have completed a theory and practical course and are only able to work under the supervision of an Instructor.

All Instructors & Assistant Instructors have Working with Children Checks in their respective States.

What safety procedures are in place?

We are accredited Yachting Australia Discover Sailing Centres. To obtain this accreditation we must have comprehensive safety and risk management procedures that are audited. This level of safety and risk management applies to the specific location, and  facilities, equipment, and the content of the course or session plans. you can discuss any aspect of safety and risk management with us.

What happens if the weather is bad?

What if it’s windy? What if a storm comes over? What if it’s just not a nice day to go sailing?

We can’t always predict the weather, that’s just totally out of our control! We do have a plan; kids love to get wet, so even if it’s raining, 9 times out of 10 we will still get out on the water. If it’s windy, and by windy we mean 20 knots, then we usually don’t go out into the Hunter Bay area, we may sail directly off Balmoral beach, which ensures we are always in protected waters. We might get the instructors to offer ‘joy rides’ to the kids to ensure that the kids get some on the water time in with an instructor on-board the boat with them.
And the storms? We monitor the weather forecast daily, so if there is a storm approaching, or if there is a warning in place (either strong wind, gale force, or storm warning), then it’s pretty safe to say that we won’t be going onto the water. If there is lightning around, we are guaranteed to stay off the water – in these situations we bring the learning inside and the activities begin like knot tying, and theory - at all times safety is our main priority.
What if I have enrolled my child into Multi Activity Program but they can’t attend because they have fallen sick?
Unfortunately we can not refund for any cancellation non-attendance at the course.

My child has completed Tackers 1-2

Yes doesn’t matter where your child completed there courses they can still follow the pathways at any recognised sailing center.

Do you merge Tackers 1-2-3 ?

Each group will have instructor and some sessions children will be sailing together.

Is there a schools pathway?

Schools can participate in a Tackers Intro for Schools as an introductory experience. There is the option to then progress through the three main levels of the Tackers program. There is no primary schools competition in sailing through Tackers as the program is based on non-competitive and fun participation. However, introducing kids to sailing at primary school level would encourage them to continue sailing at secondary school level where there is a racing program in many states.

Tell me more about Green Fleet

What is Green Fleet?

Green Fleet is a club-based junior (primary school age) sailing activity for kids who have completed Tackers 3 – Sailing Fast, or a similar level of junior Learn to Sail program. It represents Start Sailing 2 of the Sailing Balmoral Sailing School Pathway.  It is usually supervised by an appropriately qualified Yachting Australia Instructor and takes place away from the main club sailing fleet.
Green Fleet is based on evidence that primary school age kids are more likely to be retained in sport, if they have the opportunity to participant in a fun and social way, where competition is gradually introduced, and does not supersede building confidence and friendships through sailing. The structure of Green Fleet is less competitive an
