1. Watersports Instructors

Reporting to: Management

Working as part of a team to facilitate the instruction of watersports at Balmoral Water Sports Center

General house-keeping responsibilities

Experience level/Qualification level

Royal Yachting Association or Australia Sailing qualified instructor in either Dinghy Sailing or Windsurfing, Stand up Paddle Surfing, BCU qualified for Kayaking, or any other qualifications related to sailing from other contents

Experience in a watersports environment preferable

Main Duties/ responsibilities: TEACHING

Actively participate in organising and running programs for children over the age of 5 years old.

Provide watersports and activity sessions on and off the water in all weather conditions to children and adults of all abilities following the RYA/YA syllabus and Balmoral Program.

Accountable for correct presentation of courses SET UP AND PACK UP

Work as part of a team to physically set up and pack up the equipment with the use of trolleys

Pro-actively provide assistance to all guests using the equipment on the beach each day. SAFETY  Ensure effective safety cover from the beach and safety boats when required. MAINTENANCE

Take personal responsibility for the maintenance, repair and security of Balmoral equipment and the satisfactory appearance of the Balmoral Sailing School site to ensure the meeting of advertised specifications CUSTOMER RELATIONS

Generally interact with guests at all times. HOUSEKEEPING

Use of various manual and mechanical equipment to maintain a clean and safe working environment Be flexible in your job role and willing to assist in all other duties within reason as requested by your manager.

Working with children  (On Arrival)

All staff positions at Balmoral Sailing School involve working with children and you must be prepared to undertake a ‘Working with Children Check’.  If you are applying from the UK you will be required to provide a police check or criminal records check BEFORE you start work at the Sailing School.  If you are an Australian citizen or resident you will be asked to complete a check from the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation.

 

Obligatory

On your 1st day it obligatory to turn up with a six pack off Coopers Red.

Any Beer fines that you may amass when emlpoyed at Balmoral Sailing School, are to be delivered to the office at the end of each day. 

Coopers is the only tolerable beer we drink.

 

2. Windsurfing, Sailing Senior Instructor

It will be your job to run and oversee the entire activities programme and children’s clubs ensuring we are providing a fun, safe, accessible and progressive programme to guests of all abilities and levels

It will be your responsibility to make sure the highest standards are maintained and the programmes provided correlates with guest needs - be competent to organise and manage sailing courses, control group sailing tuition and supervise and assist instructors General house-keeping responsibilities – including maintaining the fleet of 12 Laser Picos, 15 optimists, 4 Hobie Cat waves, 4 Hobie cat Getaway, approximately 15 windsurf kit, kayaks for 30 people, a fleet of 25 stand up paddle boards and 5 rescue craft.

Ensure compliance with Balmoral Sailing School Standard Operating Procedures and external governing bodies, delivering and promoting exceptional standards in both deliveries afloat and ashore. Experience level/Qualification level Royal Yachting Association or Yachting Australia qualified senior instructor in Dinghy Sailing and windsurfing or equivalent. Proven experience in the watersports industry with demonstrable skills in running a large water sports department. Degree in Sports or Sailling Main Duties/ responsibilities: TEACHING

Organise staff and equipment for the days session

Organise groups of all ages.

Direct other instructors

Prepare programs for large groups – one off sessions and term time programs

Actively participate in organising and running programs for children over the age of 5 years old in the multi-activity program

Provide watersports and activity sessions on and off the water in all weather conditions to children and adults of all abilities following the RYA/YA syllabus and Balmoral Program.

Accountable for correct presentation of courses – including the delivery of briefings to party leaders; school teachers and parents

You will oversee the training and ongoing development of all employees to achieve the utmost level of competence to undertake their duties - take responsibility for the assistant instructors providing tuition to aid them in preparing for their instructor training – including powerboat and safety boat training

Assess staff members and provide a training program for those that require further assistance SET UP AND PACK UP.

Work as part of a team to physically set up and pack up the equipment with the use of trolleys

Pro-actively provide assistance to all guests using the equipment on the beach each day. SAFETY  Ensure effective safety cover from the beach and safety boats when required. MAINTENANCE

You will be responsible for both the routine repairs during the week and all the preventive maintenance during quiet days, ensuring that all maintenance lists are up to date and completed by staff CUSTOMER RELATIONS  Generally interact with guests at all times. HOUSEKEEPING

Be flexible in your job role and willing to assist in all other duties within reason as requested by your manager. Experience maintaining a fleet

3. Assistant Instructor ( AI )

 

Important Note

Assistant Instructors must never be allowed to work without supervision.

Age 14 through to 16, on reaching 16 Assistant Instructors can go and get a full teaching qualification.

As the training and assessment is limited to the role of assisting qualified instructors and does not include first aid or powerboat handling it is normal practice for every Principal to ensure that all his/her staff are conversant with the teaching techniques and local operating procedures of that centre. 

Assessment Criteria 

Following the training students will be assessed on their practical ability with beginners.  Successful candidates should be issued with a certificate, their logbook signed and training given recorded. 

 

Main Duties/ responsibilities:

 

TEACHING

  • The role of the Assistant Instructor is to assist qualified instructors to teach beginners courses.

  • A Windsurfing Assistant Instructor may teach up to and including the standard of Start Windsurfing within the National Windsurfing Scheme and Stage 1 in the Youth Windsurfing Scheme.

  • A Dinghy Assistant Instructor may teach up to and including Level 2 - Basic Skills in the National Sailing Scheme and Stage 3 of the Youth Sailing Scheme.

 

SET UP AND PACK UP

  • Work as part of a team to physically set up and pack up the equipment with the use of trolleys

  • Pro-actively provide assistance to all guests using the eequipment on the beach each day.

 

SAFETY

  • AI’S ARE NOT ALLOWED TO USE SAFETY BOATS – UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES

MAINTENANCE

  • AI’S ARE NOT ALLOWED TO USE ANY POWER TOOLS – UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES

CUSTOMER RELATIONS

  • Generally interact with guests at all times.

HOUSEKEEPING

  • General housekeeping including – keeping the buoyancy aids tidy, sweeping out the bays, hosing down the equipment before it goes back in the shed

  • Be flexible in your job role and willing to assist in all other duties within reason as requested by your manager

 

INDIVIDUALS RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • You must inform us of the days that you are going to come down to the sailing school – you cannot just turn up

  • You must keep your own records – we will provide a log book and sailing handbook for you

  • Your parents/guardians must fill in and sign a Balmoral Staff Details Form and also a Staff Medical Form

  • You will not get paid whilst you are an AI – but you will gain valuable experience and you are welcome to join any of our YA sailing or windsurfing lessons at the weekends – it is up to you to book in at the office

Role Competencies 

Pro-actively provide assistance to all instructors  with group control

To be able to windsurf, sail level to Level 1 RYA/YA standard

To work on teaching land drills, knot tying, and teach kids basics skills 

Rig boats 

LIMITS - WHAT THE AI CAN DO ON THE WATER

The training is relevant to any individual interested in encouraging children and adults to learn to windsurf or sail. Assistant Instructors should work under the supervision of an RYA Windsurfing Senior Instructor, helping qualified RYA Instructors in the early stages of a groups learning. The Assistant Instructor will work under direct supervision at all times. 

Within the Dinghy Scheme, AI’s may act as helmsmen in the early stages, encouraging the students to take over as soon as possible. When teaching single handers their role may often be that of a helper, rigger, catcher etc. Within the Windsurfing Scheme the role may involve helping a particular student having problems with a specific skill or helping the instructor rig the equipment and aid in carrying and launching the student’s equipment. The training given should reflect this.

TRAINING

The training and assessment are conducted by the Principal or Chief Instructor who holds a valid RYA Senior Instructor Certificate 

 It will cover the teaching points related to beginners as detailed in the course content and assessment criteria below   

The training should last between 20 – 25 hours and may be given as a specific Assistant Instructor Course or may be provided on a one-to-one basis over a longer period as on the job training.  The majority of the time should be spent on the water covering how to put across the various teaching points for each session as laid out in the G14 Dinghy Coaching Handbook or W33 Windsurfing Instructor Manual.

It is up to the individual to keep a log of their sailing time on the water and a diary of their time as an AI
