Welcome to balmoral

We have been renting out our equipment and teaching people to windsurf, sail and kayak since 1989. Balmoral is owned and operated by people who are passionate and knowledgeable about watersports.

Balmoral beach is located on Sydney’s lower north shore just a ten minute drive from the city. Balmoral is the harbour’s premiere beach and an ideal spot to catch the prevailing north-easterly sea breezes. The sheltered bay means that it is one of the safest and easiest places to learn to sail, kayak and windsurf, while further outback in our sailing area increased wind is perfect for more advanced sailors.

What we offer in windsurfing, sailing and kayaking:

•    Private tuition
•    Group lessons
•    Kids school holiday Camps
•    Kids lessons
•    Large group events
•    School sports sessions (with accommodation if needed)
•    Equipment hire
•    Instructor courses

Safety

Safety comes first with us in all our procedures. We consider radio communication to be essential for safety, and all our staff & safety boats are linked together to our office by radio. We are proud of the level of safety within the organization, but never complacent. We are inspected from external authorities regularly this includes NSW Maritime (HD0403) and Royal & Australian Yachting, Federation RYA, AYF and Flying Fish instructional training.

Facilities

Large class room individual changing facilities, and hot showers.

We are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Balmorals fleet of dinghies, windsurfers, kayaks, paddle surf boards, has been carefully selected to maximise the enjoyment of learning new skills in a safe controlled environment.

Our mission for the disadvantage

We help children and young people who would not otherwise have the opportunity to engage in challenging and rewarding watersports activities to increase their self-esteem, motivation and confidence. This includes working with Mosman Council, kids with disabilities, East Sydney High and kids having difficulty within the mainstream education

Schools and youth groups...

The wider benefits of participation in watersports are widely recognised and equally important. These include inspiration, enjoyment, teamwork, boosting self confidence and self reliance, as well as the making and sealing of friendships. These are key factors in making a watersports course a memorable - and in some cases life-changing - experience for people of all ages.
We offer a wide range of activities, ranging from half-day water awareness and team building taster sessions. Our most popular programme is Multi-Activity – designed to be the ideal introduction to a wide range of watersports. In addition, we offer focused dinghy sailing, windsurfing and kayaking courses at all levels. In all cases, programmes can be tailored to suit the individual needs and preferences of your group.

Day Groups
At balmoral we offers a choice of half-day and full-day, one session per week activities designed to inspire and motivate all members of your group. Whatever the activity, groups inevitably have to work together, helping them learn to interact better with both teachers and other group members.

Taster sessions
These water confidence sessions get the group used to modern personal watersports equipment and working as a team, while fun is had by all. Groups undertake a range of water-based activities, including sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, paddle surfing, tasks, practical initiative tests and challenges.
These half-day or full-day sessions are ideal for schools on a tight budget and will prove an instant and memorable hit with every group member.
Watersports days
Day groups can choose an inspiring one-day introduction to any of our core watersports, including dinghy sailing, windsurfing, paddle surfing and kayaking.

SCHOOL GROUPS

Generally schools participate in one session per week with us. Some schools like to focus purely on sailing so that the students can progress in their skills over the term. Other schools prefer more of a ‘taster’ programme where the students swap activities each week, alternating between catamaran sailing, dinghy sailing, kayaking, windsurfing and paddle boarding.

Our school watersports programme is an excellent opportunity for kids to learn new skills, increase their knowledge of the weather and the ocean, work as a team and it’s an exciting change from the usual school sports!

We take children of all ages and have specific equipment for kids. The programmes include all equipment, buoyancy aids, wetsuits, and tuition by our experienced RYA & AYF instructors. There are also hot showers and changing rooms available. All our school watersports programmes are run by experienced RYA and AYF sailing and windsurfing instructors.

What equipment do you have available?

Depending on their course, age and ability they could be using boats ranging from Toppers right through to Laser Picos, Hobie waves, Dart 16's. On the windsurfing side we have boards and kit ranging from the big kid and rookie boards through to short boards and high performance equipment for the more able, our kayaks are designed by Guy Leech, and are very easy to use.

If none of these dates are convenient

are others available?

Our programme is fairly fixed due to prior arrangements and school groups but if you have a date in mind we can see what we can do to make things happen. Obviously if it is a very busy week then adjustments might not be possible, so we don't make any promises! Any changes to the programme or new courses are at the discretion of the Chief Instructor, and must be agreed prior to arrival at the balmoral. In particular we tend to run adult weekend courses and the more high performance courses on a request basis - so if you don't see the dates you want give us a call and provided we have at least 15 days notice we will look into the possibility of running a course around your time schedule. If you have a few friends you want to bring with you then the more the merrier!
